The Wilderness Battlefield Coalition is an alliance of national, regional, state and local organizations with an abiding interest in the preservation of the historic Wilderness Battlefield in Orange County, Virginia. The coalition’s primary concern is the potential negative impacts that a proposed Walmart Supercenter would have on the neighboring Wilderness Battlefield National Park Service site.
This blog supports the efforts of the Wilderness Battlefield Coalition to block the construction of a Walmart Supercenter at the historic Wilderness Battlefield. The Walmart would be built within the historic boundaries of the battlefield and less than 1/4 mile from the National Park Service boundary. Such development is inappropriate at the gateway to such an irreplaceable historic resource.
The coalition does not oppose any Walmart in Orange County, just a Walmart at this historic location.
It’s a shame that such companies as Walmart really don’t give a damn about the civil war and the many Americans that lost their lives during the conflict. How hard is it for Walmart to choose a different location? I will never support Walmart again and I will make sure everyone in my family never buys from them. This is a slap in the face for American history. We need to stand up and fight these corporate bullies and preserve these battlefields as much as possible. I have lived in Virginia for 35 years and have visited the Wilderness Battlefield often. People who have not visited this site is missing a beautifully preserved battlefield. It is one of my top ten battlefields to visit.
I’ll volunteer to do whatever is necessary. Seems like bad national press would be the only thing from keeping wal-Mart from desecrating the battlefield
